Pain coming from the nerve roots
Spinal nerves exit the spinal cord between the vertebrae, which are separated by intervertebral discs. They are divided into dorsal and ventral nerve roots, which further divide into smaller branches.
How does the pain manifest itself?
- Pain from te nerve roots in the area of the lumbar spine is mainly manifested by radiating to the lower limb in one or more of the nerve dermatomes (nerve root/radicular pain, which is accompanied by nerve root/radicular syndrome, most often linked with the L3-S1 vertebrae)
- back pain is localised between the last ribs and the gluteal muscles
- back and lower limb pain is common, in the case of sciatica, lower limb pain is more intense than back pain.
